Hurricane Michael was the first Category 5 hurricane to make landfall in the United States since Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Michael made history as the third strongest storm by pressure and fourth strongest by wind speed to make landfall in the continental United States. The storm caused extensive damage from Panama City, Tyndall Air Force Base and Mexico Beach and further east into Gulf County. Nearly all homes were totally destroyed within Mexico Beach.
