Eating Disorders Portrayed in Film

In the movie, Matt (played by Tom Felton) is not only the eating disorder but also Olivia (played by Troian Bellisario)'s hallucination of her dead brother. I've never heard of anything like this happening before, so I doubt that it's very realistic. I watched the entirety of the film, and I didn't feel that it was trying to spread awareness about an eating disorder. It was just using Olivia's ED as a plotline. When Olivia arrives at the ED treatment centre, some of the other girls (one is shown at 4:24) are almost beautifully pale with bright lipstick and snazzy clothing. Finally, the scene where she gets tubed could be considered a bit overdone, but it was ok. Feeding tubes hurt a lot initially going in but don't really hurt at all once they're in and the solution is being pumped through them. No one would be screaming in pain once the tube is already in. I could see how someone could react that way, though, just because of the intensity of the situation. I think it was only shown that way in the movie for dramatic effect.My Skinny Sister: This film is a realistic depiction of what a family has to go through when someone has an eating disorder. In this case, Katja, the older sister, has bulimia- meaning that she purges (pukes) after she eats. The first scene in the bathroom between Katja and Stella (the younger sister) perfectly shows the lengths that someone with an ED will go to continue his/her destructive habits. The last scene also does a great job of revealing how an ED can spiral out of control and even get to the point where the sufferer is afraid to drink something as simple as water. This movie does not put EDs in a good light at all. It is a heartbreaking film, but I would definitely recommend it.To the Bone: Like most ED movies, this one flew under everyone's radar. This is a Netflix original about a girl named Ellen who suffers from Anorexia Nervosa. She agrees to stay at an *eating disorder recover house* - I guess you could call it- which is not a typical form of treatment. The difficulties of her family and recovery life are displayed here. The movie tries to provide the audience with a likable story and characters while also informing about the tragedies of EDs. To the Bone is a bit more lighthearted than My Skinny Sister but is still a serious movie about the consequences of this terrible disease. This is also a recommended movie for those with a Netflix account.Skins (UK): If I could describe Cassie's anorexia story in two phrases, it would be exaggerated and over the top. With that being said, I do not think, by any means, that Skins demonstrates an unrealistic image of anorexia. In the comical scene between Cassie and Dr. Stock, they both act overly happy and cheery. It is common knowledge throughout the ED community that the best way to get OUT of ED treatment is to act happy (even if you're not) and comply (and then likely go straight back to the bad eating/purging habits once back home). Dr. Stock advertises the hospital as a safe, organized place while, at the same time, a naked man is being tackled and grabbed by the genitals by doctors. This only adds to the irony of what the doctor is telling Cassie. At the end of the scene, you see Cassie kiss Dr. Stock on the cheek. This created an awkward moment for the doctor, enticing her to recommend that Cassie never come back to treatment ever again. The scene where Cassie encounters Sid shows that weight loss is constantly on someone's mind when he/she has an ED. The last clip simply shows an anorexic's distaste toward food.
